THE UNEARTHING OF REMAINS

Sida Gunnga(the rural government office which had been located in Shida area)was found in 1977 during the research and a preparetion for a housing at this site.From this site ,the remains of the buildings,the main gate,the wooden fence ,the well and the road were unearthed.A large number of "Bokushodoki"were found.Bokushodoki are tableware which contains names referring to the district of Shida and its offcers."Kuriya"(a place whereofficers'meals were mainly served)were dug out.Inkstones,tableware and wooden objects were also dug out.From these remains,it was proved that this site contains the remains ofGunga,Which existed during Nara and Heian periods(710-1192).It became a national site in October 1980,and gives us a clear image of oldrural office buildings.

The center of this site is located in the small mounth of a valley facing to the north and fronting on a swamp.In the site,a grounp of buildings were constructed effectibery in a very small area,80m from east to west by 70m from north to south .By studying the locations of the buildings in this group were changed from the shaped pattern(the first term),to a pattern which dibided the blocks according to the functions of the buildings(the second term).

INFORMATION FOR EXHIBITIONS

The process, from the discovery of the remains to the restoration of one Shida Gunga building, is displayed.The function of ancient rural gobernment offices can be seen in three dimennshions by taking a look at the replica of the building,Which is as large as its original.

The situation during "Shida Gun" (Shida district),the worl of "Gunji" (the rural governor)and the rural office are displeyed.From "Mok-Kan" (wooden writing tablets)which were dug out in Nara,the system of rural office in those days can be understood.

*UNEARTHED OBJECTS FROM SHIDA GUNGA SITE
Unearthed objects from Shida Gunga site are displayed.Those unearthed objects prove that the remains belong to Shida Gunga site.Many piedes of 1200 year-old Bokushokoki,on which the word 'Shida' is written,are featured.
